Human eye is a soft and pliable structure likely to collapse as result of atmospheric pressure. To maintain its shape and to bear the atmospheric pressure, system is in place to generate eye pressure inside the eye to keep it inflated. This is known as intra-ocular pressure, or IOP. When this IOP increases to dangerous levels, it can damage the nerve connecting the eye to the brain. This can result in decreased peripheral vision and can silently lead to blindness (silent thief of vision) if not treated early and properly.
In fact, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the world, overall 3% of population above age 40 years is likely to have the disease.
Effect of glaucoma on eye:
- Increase eye pressure
- Damage to nerve of eye
- Loss of field of vision
Who is more at risk of vision loss due to glaucoma:
- People with high myopia (near sighted)

- People using steroid as eye drop, tablets, creams
